Still pulling the threads of my practice and research together although I intend to stop calling it that. I came across Foucault’s phrase that research is (the) practice, which is exactly how I feel as, for me, they are so intertwined. So, in future, my practice contains all that goes into it. I have a huge wealth of material from my recent conference in San Cesario di Lecce. One of the most interesting sounds was from Agostino Aresi, Dario Muci and Irene Lungo, Sardinian singers performing traditional songs (I think) throughout the Distilleria de Giorgi. Held later in the evening, the singers performed separately and together throughout the building with the audience wandering round until they heard a voice. It transcended the usual notion of performance creating a dichotomy of time and place. In contrast, I went to see the Paula Rego exhibition at Milton Keynes Gallery. Somehow, although I am an admirer of her work, the exhibition seemed less than fascinating. Perhaps it was how they were hung, the huge themes seemed distilled by the close proximity of the paintings.
The conference, IX International Symposium on Soundscape, was a mix of performances, papers, artwork, sound walks and videos. Met up with old friends and made new ones and finally have improved the way I present papers. I am now trying to make sense of all the work I did there, mostly recordings and drawings, to put them into context with my overall research.
Over the summer, I took part in Lena Sèraphin’s Wording project which was shown in Venice Biennale and will now be shown at the Research Pavilion#3 Info Lab in Helsinki between 25.10–17.11.2019. Next, I will be showing Encountering/It is as it was at Mansions of the Future, Lincoln as part of the InDialogues conference.
